Only a pawn can be whatever it aims to be.

More to come.
What does it take to form a person when the rules are set before you arrive? A body, a place, a class, a race and a history are placed on the board before the first move, and every move after is kept on record. Pawn Formations begins from that question and leaves it open.
Jet Le Parti comes to it as an artist and theorist working across painting, sound and writing, the figure Kaltblut placed at the center of the Residuum movement. His is an engaged phenomenology, attentive to what a life under saturation leaves behind, and it works from the grey between positions, what The Village Voice called "the impossible middle ground." In this exhibition that attention takes a minimal register. The work defaults to the mark. Each medium is carried to its end and stripped to what remains: paintings worked from color down to black on black, surfacing only for a viewer who moves; photographs run through solvent and transfer until the image is spent; grids in wax, chalk and graphite crossed by a looser hand; and Paris, Troy (Pirated), a spoken cento assembled from borrowed lines, a voice made from what was already said.
Nothing here is resolved for the viewer. The epigraph reads less as comfort than as a dare, possibility rather than promise. The exhibition asks what can be claimed inside a game already in motion, and what, once everything else has been taken away, still holds its square.
